Europe is facing increasing security challenges resulting from international instability, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine. These developments have highlighted the growing risk of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats, emphasizing the need for effective medical countermeasures to protect both military personnel and civilian populations.
RESILIENCE-R-2024 is the second research action implemented under the RESILIENCE Framework Partnership Agreement (FPA), established in 2022 to strengthen European research and innovation in medical countermeasures against CBRN threats. The project focuses on the development of innovative diagnostic tools and therapeutic solutions addressing biological and chemical hazards.
The project is organized into six complementary sub-projects covering management, toxin diagnostics and countermeasures, rapid field diagnostics, biomarker discovery, treatment of biologically contaminated wounds, and the development of next-generation enzyme scavengers. By advancing promising technologies towards Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 4–5, RESILIENCE-R-2024 aims to strengthen Europe's security, strategic autonomy, and preparedness for future CBRN emergencies.

  • Project Objectives

The overall objective of RESILIENCE-R-2024 is to develop innovative medical countermeasures (MCMs) against Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats through multidisciplinary European collaboration.
The project specifically aims to:
•    develop innovative diagnostic technologies for rapid identification of biological and chemical threats; 
•    design and validate novel therapeutic strategies against CBRN agents; 
•    improve preparedness and response capabilities for both military and civilian populations; 
•    strengthen European research and technological capacity in medical countermeasures; 
•    advance promising technologies to Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 4–5; 
•    reinforce the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB) and strategic autonomy in health security.

  • Description of the sub-project SP5 – WOUNDS B

SP5 – WOUNDS B (Treatment of Wounds and Injuries Contaminated by Biological Agents) focuses on developing innovative therapeutic approaches for wounds and traumatic injuries contaminated with biological threat agents.
The sub-project aims to improve treatment strategies by combining expertise in biomaterials, biotechnology, microbiology, regenerative medicine and biomedical engineering. The developed solutions are intended to increase survival rates, reduce infection-related complications and improve recovery following exposure to hazardous biological agents.

  • Project Partners

RESILIENCE-R-2024 is funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF) of the European Commission and brings together 21 organizations from 11 European countries, representing military institutions, universities, research organizations and industrial partners.
The SP5 project partners includes:
•    Lodz University of Technology (Poland) – coordinator of SP5 and leader of research activities focused on novel therapeutic strategies for biologically contaminated wounds. 
•    Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA, France) – one of Europe's leading public research organizations conducting multidisciplinary research in healthcare, life sciences, energy technologies and national security. 
•    CEA-Leti (Laboratoire d'Électronique et de Technologie de l'Information, France) – an internationally recognized research institute specializing in microelectronics, biosensors, medical technologies, semiconductor devices and advanced diagnostic platforms. 
•    Medical University of Graz (Austria) – a leading European medical university with internationally recognized expertise in clinical medicine, translasonal biomedical research, infectious diseases and regenerative medicine. 
•    University of Latvia (Latvia) – one of the country's largest research universities, contributing expertise in molecular biology, microbiology and biomedical sciences.

  • Role of Lodz University of Technology

Lodz University of Technology is the leader of SP5 – WOUNDS B within the RESILIENCE-R-2024 consortium. The sub-project is coordinated by Dr. Eng. Ewelina Pabjańczyk-Wlazło from Textile Institute. The university is responsible for its scientific, technical and administrative coordination. Research conducted at Lodz University of Technology focuses on developing innovative therapeutic strategies for wounds and injuries contaminated by biological agents, integrating expertise in biomaterials, biomedical engineering and biotechnology.

  • Expected Impact

The RESILIENCE-R-2024 project will contribute to strengthening Europe's preparedness against emerging biological and chemical threats by developing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. The outcomes are expected to improve the management and treatment of injuries contaminated by biological agents, benefiting both military personnel and civilian populations during emergency situations, pandemics and CBRN incidents.
The project is expected to:
•    deliver innovative medical countermeasures against biological threats; 
•    improve treatment strategies for contaminated wounds and traumatic injuries; 
•    strengthen European preparedness for health emergencies and defence-related challenges; 
•    foster collaboration between academia, industry and defence organizations; 
•    advance scientific knowledge in biotechnology, regenerative medicine and biomedical engineering; 
•    reinforce Europe's strategic autonomy and resilience in the field of CBRN protection.
