Research achievements
Dr hab. Eng. Michał Gołdyn from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering at Lodz University of Technology is a specialist in reinforced concrete structures. His research activity focuses on the safety and rational design of slab-column systems.
His most significant research achievement between 2020 and 2025 involved the co-development, experimental validation, and preparation of a design procedure for an innovative method of increasing the punching shear capacity of lightweight aggregate concrete slabs using ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) capitals. These studies, which included full-scale tests, allowed for the refinement of computational models and resulted in the granting of Polish Patent No. 241844. For his outstanding habilitation achievements, he was honoured with the prestigious Prof. Stefan Bryła Award in 2025.
Research profile and interests
The main directions of Dr hab. Eng. M. Gołdyn’s research work include punching shear of flat slabs, the application of lightweight aggregate concretes, and methods for strengthening existing structures. He conducts research on the effect of edge column loading on the slab load-bearing capacity and analyses the composition of concretes cast at different times, including ultra-high-strength concretes and fibre-reinforced concretes. His work addresses current challenges in construction, such as the need to extend the service life of structures, reduce the mass of structural elements, limit the consumption of natural resources, and use waste materials in line with the principles of a circular economy.
In the near future, he plans to continue research aimed at the more efficient use of construction materials and the rational design of reinforced concrete structures.
Industrial cooperation, implementations, and expert activity
Dr hab. Eng. M. Gołdyn’s activity acts as a bridge between science and engineering practice, covering a wide range of expert assessments, technical projects, and supervision of works related to the strengthening of industrial facilities.
He actively supports the economic environment by participating in projects aimed at preserving and extending the service life of existing, often historic structures. He is a recognised expert, serving in roles such as a member of the Concrete Structures Section of Committee on Civil Engineering and Water Management of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the Board of the Łódź Branch of the Polish Association of Civil Engineers and Technicians (PZITB).
His international activity includes, among others, a research internship in France and presentations of research results at prestigious fib congresses, which confirms the high standing of his work in the engineering community.
