priority research area: (Re)EnergyTech
Research achievements
Prof. Paweł Wawrzyniak, PhD, DSc, Eng., is a specialist in chemical engineering, focusing on the intensification of heat and mass transfer processes and energy-efficient drying technologies.
His key achievements between 2020 and 2025 include the conceptualisation, design, and construction of a pilot plant for continuous freeze-drying, which allows for a significant reduction in process time while maintaining high product quality.
Furthermore, the scientist has developed an innovative chemical heat pump that enables the recovery of energy from low-temperature waste heat streams and the generation of technologically useful heating steam.
Research profile and interests
The Professor's research covers a wide spectrum of process engineering, from spray drying and freeze-drying technologies to advanced modelling of multiphase flows.
As the Head of the Department of Environmental Engineering at Lodz University of Technology, he manages teams involved in the development of environmentally friendly technologies and energy optimisation.
In his future research plans, Prof. Wawrzyniak intends to focus on high energy-efficiency drying methods, including the use of superheated steam for spray drying, with planned international cooperation in this area with the University of Hohenheim.
Industrial cooperation and expert activity
Prof. Wawrzyniak’s scientific activity demonstrates a strong applicative dimension, often inspired by the direct needs of the industry. The scientist has implemented projects for leading enterprises, such as Grupa Azoty, Henkel, Procter & Gamble, and Polfarmex, developing, among others, the methodology for drying graphene flakes as well as systems for the pharmaceutical and aerospace industries. His portfolio includes the implementation of many installations operating continuously in industrial conditions.
The Professor is also an active participant in the international scientific community, serving since 2023 as Poland’s representative on the Working Party on Drying at the European Federation of Chemical Engineers and as a member of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer.
