Research achievements

Dr Tomasz Boruta specialises in research on the secondary metabolism of filamentous fungi and actinobacteria, particularly in the context of bioreactor co-cultures.

His most significant achievements include the characterisation of the metabolic repertoire of Aspergillus terreus and the identification of innovative applications for aluminium oxide nanoparticles in microbial morphology engineering.

As one of the first researchers, he provided a detailed description of filamentous microorganism bioreactor co-cultures conducted for the production of secondary metabolites, demonstrating the potential to obtain compounds not found under monoculture conditions.

Between 2020 and 2025, his research primarily focused on analysing the production of secondary metabolites in bioreactor co-cultures involving fungi of the Aspergillus genus and actinobacteria of the Streptomyces genus.

Research profile and interests

Dr Boruta's research interests focus on bioprocess engineering, metabolic modelling, and microbial morphology engineering. The scientist analyses metabolite production under submerged culture conditions, utilising advanced bioinformatic and experimental methods in stirred-tank bioreactors. In his research, he analyses the influence of environmental and morphological factors on the efficiency of biotechnological processes.

In his future research plans, he intends to develop studies on metabolite production in filamentous microorganisms under cellular stress conditions and conduct analyses of the metabolism of the fungus Aspergillus fijiensis in submerged culture.

Collaboration and expert activity

Dr Tomasz Boruta combines experience gained at renowned scientific centres, such as the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, with research work at the Department of Bioprocess Engineering at Lodz University of Technology.

For his scientific achievements, he was honoured with the Minister of Education and Science Scholarship for Outstanding Young Scientists in 2022.

The scientist is actively involved in organisational and expert activities, serving as an Associate Editor for the journal Microbial Cell Factories, as well as a member of the Discipline Council for Chemical Engineering and the Scientific Council of the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School at Lodz University of Technology.
