priority research area: (Re)EnergyTech
Research achievements
Piotr Łuczak, PhD Eng., an assistant professor at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering at Lodz University of Technology, is a specialist in the discipline of information and communication technology. His research activity focuses on hybrid (symbolic-connectionist) intelligent systems and hyperdimensional computing, with a particular emphasis on improving the explainability of artificial intelligence models.
He has conducted research on neuromorphic computing, including algorithms designed for low-power edge devices and their implementations in analogue hardware, such as in vital sign detection systems using FMCW radars.
Research profile and interests
Dr Łuczak’s primary research areas include artificial intelligence, machine learning, image processing, and computer vision. He works on integrating knowledge with machine learning in smart sensors and developing explainable AI models that combine hyperdimensional computing (HDC) with neural networks.
He is currently focused on the development of explainable AI models that utilise high-dimensional spaces to represent and manipulate intermediate symbols within hidden representations.
He also conducts interdisciplinary research in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology of the University of Lodz.
Industrial cooperation, implementations, and expert activity
Dr Łuczak is an active participant in international research and development projects. Between 2021 and 2025, he took part in the MISEL project (EU Horizon 2020), focused on multispectral vision systems with an embedded low-power neural network. He has also collaborated on the AIR project, carried out within the CHIST-ERA consortium, concerning intelligent analogue chips for radar signal processing and worked on the development of a platform for the management and large-scale analysis (Big Data) of consumer data (financed by the ERDF).
