Research achievements

Dr hab. Laurent Babout is an expert with an interdisciplinary research profile, combining knowledge in materials science, non-destructive testing, and image processing. His scientific career focuses on in situ tomographic imaging and advanced 3D image processing, which are successfully applied in materials and process engineering.

One of his most significant achievements in recent years was supervising research within the TOMOCON project, which resulted in the development of a real-time flow analyser. This system, based on electrical resistance tomography, enables the optimisation of liquid-gas separation processes in cyclone separators and can be utilised in advanced control loops.

Research profile and interests

The research interests of Dr hab. Laurent Babout have evolved from the long-term analysis of microstructures and material degradation processes using tomographic techniques to current research on innovative teaching methods in computer science and human-computer interaction in interactive art.

In the field of process engineering, the scientist specialises in the use of tomographic methods to study the dynamics of multiphase flows. In his future research plans, he offers expert knowledge in the non-destructive characterisation of materials and process engineering, with a particular emphasis on projects aimed at energy optimisation.

Collaboration and expert activity

Dr hab. Laurent Babout possesses extensive experience in implementing international research projects, collaborating with institutions such as HZDR in Germany and TU Delft in the Netherlands.

The scientist serves as the Deputy Director for Development at the Institute of Applied Computer Science at Lodz University of Technology, and in 2026, he undertook the co-editorship of a special issue of the journal Flow Measurement and Instrumentation dedicated to measurement technologies in multiphase flows.
